Tesla has officially discontinued the white interior option for Model Y vehicles produced at Gigafactory Shanghai, replacing it with a new color called Zen Grey.
The update is already reflected in configurators across several markets supplied by Shanghai, including Asia-Pacific regions such as Australia, Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines.
Unlike the previous white interior, which featured strong contrast with black trim elements, the new Zen Grey adopts a more unified and balanced design language. Several interior components that were previously finished in black are now color-matched to the grey theme, including:
- Armrests
- Door grab handles
- Center console trim
- Wireless charging area
This creates a softer, more cohesive cabin environment, moving away from the high-contrast look of the white interior.
Tesla has confirmed that Zen Grey is not an additional option, but a direct replacement for the white interior in Shanghai-built Model Y Premium variants.
Why Tesla Is Making This Change
The shift appears to be driven by both design evolution and real-world usability.
While the white interior has long been popular for its clean and futuristic look, it has also been widely criticized for being difficult to maintain. Zen Grey offers a more practical alternative while still delivering a premium, modern aesthetic.
Industry observers note that Tesla often introduces changes at Gigafactory Shanghai first, before rolling them out globally—meaning this update could eventually affect Model Y configurations worldwide.
What This Means for Buyers
- White interior is no longer available (Shanghai-built units)
- Zen Grey becomes the new “light interior” option
- Interior design is now more consistent and less contrast-heavy
- Likely better long-term durability and easier maintenance
At Evolt, we will continue to support white interior owners. Its discontinuation doesn’t take away from its appeal. it remains a timeless and iconic choice among Tesla enthusiasts.
